Despite our best efforts, pets can escape once in a while. Whether the leash slipped out of your hand during a walk and your dog went running after a squirrel or someone accidentally forgot to lock the gate surrounding your backyard, things can happen. Naturally, you want to ensure the chances of your pet finding their way back home are as high as possible.
Microchip implantation is a way to accomplish this. The chip is about the size of a single grain of rice and is placed under loose skin at the back of the neck. When a lost pet is found, a veterinarian can use a scanner to check for a microchip, and the owner can then be contacted. However, we at Deep River Veterinary Hospital, PC also recommend placing an ID tag on your pet’s collar, as pets with ID tags tend to avoid ending up in shelters and make their way home more quickly. But since ID tags can be removed, having a microchip implanted offers extra protection. Our veterinary clinic utilizes this practice with most of our patients for ultra-security.
